FAQ’S

How can a therapist really help me?

Therapy may not be for everyone or every problem. It is true that friends and family can offer sound advice that may be helpful in creating change. However, there are also issues that require a trained professional to assess and treat the problem. Also, one might not always feel comfortable discussing more private issues with a loved one. In these instances, effective therapy with a highly trained provider may be the most appropriate option.

Therapy in this practice is active, goal-focused, and directive. Interventions target the client’s unique needs to help remove any barriers for goal achievement and give client’s tools to increase meaning and overall well-being

How long is each therapy session?

Individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Although there is a clear agenda and structure, there is still time to explore what is necessary to be sure that the client is really understood. Given the nature of emotional and behavioral problems, it is critical that the work doesn’t stop after the 50 minute session. Home practice assignments are given and expected to be completed between sessions. Unhelpful habits and thinking patterns take years to develop, therefore practice integrated into day to day life will help resolve problems sooner.

What are the risks and benefits of therapy?

Therapy has both benefits and risks. The risks may include experiencing uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, anxiety, confusion, or frustration. These feelings typically occur as a result of discussing difficult aspects of your life and they are a normal response to the process of therapy.

However, therapy can bring significant reduction of distressing emotions, a stronger self image, enhancement to relationships, closure of unclosed emotional wounds, and resolution of
conflicts.

Do you offer sliding scale rates?

On occasion I can negotiate a lower fee based upon income and financial need. You may discuss this with me, if it is a concern. If I am unable to accommodate your financial situation, I may be able to provide you with referrals.
